The backlight is turned off while waiting for LCD to finish pixel transitions (unseen by human eyes). Thus, the human eye no longer sees motion blur caused by pixel persistence limitations. The display is able to finish refreshing before the next refresh cycle by controlling the turning off of the backlight.
